Spotify Celebrates Khaleeji Pop with Sultan Al-Murshed and Aseel Hameem in Times Square

Spotify is celebrating the rich tapestry of Arabic music by highlighting Saudi artist Sultan Al-Murshed and Iraqi artist Aseel Hameem as the featured artists for its RADAR Arabia and EQUAL Arabia programs in May. Both artists are being showcased on a prominent billboard in New York City’s Times Square.

Nada Elmeri, Spotify’s Artist and Label Partnerships Manager for the Gulf Region at Spotify MENA, emphasized the platform's dedication to Arabic music. “We are committed to showcasing and celebrating genres and creators that reflect the diverse spectrums of Arabic music,” Elmeri said.

This month’s focus is on Khaleeji Pop, a genre deeply embedded in the cultural heritage of the Arabian Gulf. Elmeri highlighted its significance, stating, “Khaleeji Pop has played a pivotal role in our childhood memories and continues to resonate with young listeners, earning loyalty from fans across generations.”

Sultan Al-Murshed, a rising star from Saudi Arabia, has been chosen as the RADAR Arabia artist for May. His compelling melodies and vocals have captured the hearts of many, particularly with his debut single “Wala Ghaltah,” which has over 1 million streams on Spotify. Recently, his music streams have surged by 73 percent, and fan engagement has increased by 97 percent. Al-Murshed also collaborated with DJ and producer R3HAB and Big Bo in 2022 for the official Gamers8 anthem, “Challenge.”

Aseel Hameem, daughter of renowned Iraqi musician Kareem Hameem, is the EQUAL Arabia artist of the month. Known as “The Guitar of Iraq,” Hameem’s musical talent was evident from a young age. Despite her Iraqi roots, she has mastered the Saudi and Khaleeji dialects, gaining significant popularity in Saudi Arabia. Her hits “Shkad Helw” and “Al Mafrod” have been particularly successful, with “Al Mafrod” accumulating over 14 million streams on Spotify. Her latest release, “Mostafz Alnas,” has struck a chord with audiences in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, Germany, and the US.

Spotify is amplifying Hameem’s presence through a comprehensive promotional campaign throughout May, including editorial placements and social media support.

By featuring Al-Murshed and Hameem on the Times Square billboard and on the covers of the RADAR Arabia and EQUAL Arabia playlists, Spotify aims to make a substantial impact in promoting Khaleeji Pop. Elmeri explained, “To spotlight the genre in an impactful way, we featured two Khaleeji artists at different stages of their careers.” Al-Murshed represents the new wave of Khaleeji Pop, while Hameem has been a significant presence over the years, frequently appearing on Spotify’s Saudi Wrapped lists.

RADAR Arabia and EQUAL Arabia are part of Spotify’s global initiatives to support emerging and female artists, providing them with the platform and resources necessary to reach a wider audience.
